ʻOpihi picking is a favorite pastime for locals and is a favorite pūpū (appetizer). This design expresses man and nature's relationship: the mahina (moon) is at the center of the design, as it affects the ocean tides in exposing and hiding the ʻopihi on the rocky shorelines.
