Coconut Knee Drum
Pūniu is a Hawaiian coconut knee drum made with coconut and goat skin. Pūniu accompanies pahu drums to create a blend of drum sounds that were utilized in Hula or in Oli (Hawaiian Chant). These Pūniu were created by Kumu Kaponoʻai Molitau and are all uniquely different due to the slight size difference in the coconut. The sounds of the pūniu are amazingly loud for its size and is a great instrument for all Hula dancers and Kumu Hula.
